Are you a Purple Cow Financial Professional? Do you even know what that means? Let me explain. Author Seth Godin wrote a book called “Purple Cow” where he describes the importance of standing out in whatever industry you are in, just like a purple cow would in a field of all normal looking, brown cows. For instance, imagine what you would do if you were driving along through the country and all of a sudden saw a purple cow sitting out in a field amongst all brown cows. You would most likely pull your car over, take pictures, share the picture with everyone you know, and continue to tell the story about the purple cow to anyone who would listen to you.
This same theory applies to businesses, brands, and even financial professionals.
And if you can become a Purple Cow Financial Professional, you will have a business and brand that your clients are talking about, sharing, and telling their friends about.
In other words, there is immense Power in becoming a “Purple Cow”. And that is exactly why we had Jeff Rose, the founder of Good Financial Cents, on our live hangout for Episode 24 of Hangout Madness. In our opinion, Jeff Rose is one of the best (if not the best) examples of becoming a Purple Cow Financial Professional.
During this live interview with Jeff, we discuss how his business and his brand literally exploded all from a simple blog where he didn’t even know what he was doing at first. Of course, over time Jeff became more of an expert on blogging, videos, and now even podcasts. One of the important takeaways from our talk on this was to be like Nike and “Just Do It”. Meaning, just get out there and do a blog, do a video, and have some fun. Know that your first blog or video will probably stink compared to what you are doing a year from now. But the only way to know for sure is to get out there and do it!
Purple Cow Financial Professionals have fun, and also know how to hit the “Publish” Button.
One of the best tidbits that I heard Jeff say on the hangout was his comment about his wife giving him some of the greatest advice on video marketing ever. The long and short of it was that his wife was filming Jeff and in the middle of filming she said, “Jeff, this is boring. No one is going to watch this”. So Jeff took her advice and did the video over again having fun, and the video took off in terms of people watching it. The moral of the story is that ALL people (yes, even your clients) want to be entertained and watch fun people.
Secondly, purple cow professionals are always putting new content out there and testing what is working and what isn’t working. I call this “hitting the publish button”. I find that too many financial professionals have the tendency to talk about blogging, to talk about great video ideas, but never getting around to hitting the “Publish” Button.
Finally, make sure to watch the full hangout recording above to learn about how powerful it is to be a purple cow financial professional. And then JUST DO IT!
