How to Maximize Social Media Public Relations

What a WILD Social Media #FridayToast!  On this crazy Episode 21 of Hangout Madness, our favorite Social Media Maven, Amy McIlwain, gives us the down and dirty on the importance of social media public relations (aka “PR”) marketing.  We end up discussing everything from how to self-promote yourself, how to use social media platforms to get free PR, and best practices to take the story offline after being online.

So just what is Social Media Public Relations?

Social Media public relations is simply utilizing your free social media platforms to get PR for yourself, your company, and your brand.  Amy teaches us how simple it is to not only share your own PR, but also how powerful commenting on other people’s accolades and blogs can be.  In fact, Amy describes how her own transformation of starting a company from scratch with little to no marketing budget where she now is invited (and paid) to speak at conferences and events nationwide.

And what is so cool is that much of her success story can be tracked back to her wide use of social media public relations.

One of the main takeaways that I came away with is the importance of just being out there and engaging on the social media outlets.  So many publications (from newspapers to online magazines) are always looking for new writers and unique content.  And if you aren’t commenting, engaging, blogging, and putting out unique content, the chance that someone is going to recognize you or ask you to do some content for them is slim to none.

Finally, the simple act of following leaders or people that are interested in collaborating with (or in Amy’s case “stalking people”), commenting on their posts, and making yourself known, can go a long way.  For instance, think about when you personally have someone “Like”, “Retweet”, “Share”, or “Comment” on your posts, pictures, or blog.  You truly appreciate the fact that they care enough to do it, and you usually want to reciprocate when they ask.   So don’t forget the power of social media interaction.
